Alibi Room 100th Beer Rotation
Nigel serving a cask ale

This Thursday will be the 100th rotation of the Alibi Room’s beer list. To mark the occasion owner Nigel Springthorpe will be replacing the regular lineup with a special selection featuring great current BC beers along with signature beers from many BC Brewers. Some kegs will be new, others may be kegs collected over the years and aged in the Alibi Room’s cellar. Highlights include a cask of Driftwood’s wet-hopped Sartori Harvest IPA, the last of Swan’s Legacy-Ale barleywine, and Steamworks’ Blitzen & Yaletown’s Le Nez Rouge Belgian-style tripels.

As if that wasn’t enough, The Alibi Room will be releasing the aged bottles they’ve collected and aged in their cellar.

This week is shaping up to be a very exciting week for craft beer lovers. First up, this Thursday is The Alibi Room’s 100th beer rotation celebration featuring a special lineup of signature, current, or otherwise remarkable casks and kegs from BC brewers. Aged beers from the Alibi’s cellar will also be available. The Alibi opens at 5pm so you’ll still have time to make it to the cask at Yaletown Brewing beforehand. More info on this event can be found in this week’s feature article. Don’t forget to check out the Firkin Friday at Taylor’s Crossing the next day!

Next up is the annual X-Mas X-treme beer festival at DIX this Saturday featuring seasonal releases from local BC brewers. While some beers may be draught-style, many will be casks, and all will be limited release, seasonal, or ‘one-offs’ from local brewers. Tickets are $20 ($15 for CAMRA members), and $1 for each 4 oz. sample. The festival starts at noon and runs until 5:00pm.

While the lineup may change, it looks like the following beers will be at the festival:
  • DIX: Barleywine, Imperial Stout, IPA
  • Taylor’s Crossing: Festbier (a strong Vienna lager spiced with Juniper berries), Christmas Cake (an amber ale flavoured with molasses, traditional brandied

     fruits, and Christmas spices)
  • Whistler Brewhouse: Dave’s Damn Dangerously Drinkable Double IPA (8.5%, 70 IBUs, Dry-Hopped with Cascades)
  • Swans: TBA
  • Spinnakers: IPA (charged with sweet wort and dry-hopped with Magnum hops)
  • Driftwood: Porter
  • Longwood: Doppelbock (9.5%, Aged 8 months)
  • Central City: IPA
  • R&B: Auld Nick Winter Ale
  • Russell: Spiced Winter Warmer
  • Dead Frog: Oaked Winter Warmer
  • Granville Island: Jolly Abbot Belgian-Style Tripel

Casks

Yaletown Making it Real (Ale)

December 3 @ 4:00pm
This Thursday brewmaster Iain Hill has a cask of his IPA dry-hopped with Amarillo and Simcoe hops. The Amarillo and Simcoe should add a big citrus profile. According to Iain, if the Simcoe influence comes through it should be almost tangerine-like.

Dix Cask Thursday

December 3 @ 5:00pm
No cask this week due to X-mas X-treme on Saturday.

Taylor’s Crossing Firkin Friday

December 4 @ 5:00pm
Brewmaster Dave Varga has a cask of his Indian Arm IPA to tap for this month’s Firkin Friday at Taylor’s Crossing. This is the latest addition to the regular lineup at Taylor’s Crossing (replacing the Irish Honey Ale). Dave has brewed this to be a sessionable IPA. It’s 6% and brewed with Millennium, UK Kent Goldings, Cascade and Columbus hops, and further dry-hopped with Cascades.

The Whip Real Ale Sundays

December 6 @ 4:00pm
The whip will have a cask of Steamworks Nut Brown this week. This nut brown is back on tap this fall at Steamworks after a year-long absence. Its a classic nut brown, big on the malts with a nutty, chocolaty profile with balanced hops.  Nut browns pair well with a wide variety of foods, including chicken, pork, salmon, and hearty dishes. I’d be inclined to pair this with the cheddar perogies served with beer-infused sausages.

St. Augustines’s Manichean Mondays

December 7 @ 6:00pm
St. Augustine’s will be tapping a cask form storm brewing this Monday. Not word yet from James at Storm on what the specifics of the cask will be.

New Beer Arrivals/Restocks/Seasonals

Taylor’s Crossing has a new seasonal porter that will most-likely be on tap by the end of the week. Brewmaster Dave Varga brewed this with pale, amber, crystal and chocolate malts to create a rich, flavourful porter for the holidays. It’s 5.8% ABV, and will be available on Tap at Taylor’s Crossing and around town as a Red Truck Limited release.

A few new winter seasonals are heading this way. Salt Spring Fireside winter ale has hit the shelves here in Vancouver, and Phillips Instigator Doppelbock and Deadhead Barley Wine are on their way. Expect to see the Phillips releases late this week or next week.

Lastly, I have it on good authority that Brooklyn Local 2 should be arriving in the next week or so!
