Beer Wars Poster

CAMRA Vancouver, along with Beer Thirst and the Alibi Room present the first Vancouver screenings of Beer Wars. Directed by Anat Baron, Beer Wars explores the behind the scenes of the American beer industry, where small, independent brewers have to fight daily against large, corporate brewers unwilling to lose any market share. We will be joined by special guest, Greg Koch, CEO & Co-Founder of Stone Brewing Co for the screenings. Tickets are $15.76 for CAMRA members ($20.91 otherwise), and include a beer with the screening. Tickets can be purchased online only.

Russell BrewingPlease welcome our latest corporate sponsor, Russell Brewing:

“Locally
brewed in British Columbia, Russell Brewing is committed to brewing
real beer. 100% natural. No shortcuts. No preservatives. No
pasteurization.”

Since 1995 Russell Brewing has been creating local craft beer for BC pubs and restaurants. For its first 13 years Russell Brewing sold only draught beer, however in 2008 they added a canning line and a bottling line to reach more craft beer fans. Last year was the launch of their Brewmaster Series limited releases, first in May with an IPA, and then again in October with a Marzen. Their next limited release, a porter, will be hitting the shelves over the next few weeks. In addition, Russell Brewing has recently purchased new cask equipment to expand their cask programme. They’ve already had some great casks at local cask nights (St Augustine’s) and cask festivals (DIX X-Mas X-Treme).

Russell Brewing

This Sunday, January 10th is the third annual Feast of Five Firkins at The Whip. This five course dinner features cask ale paired with each course. The cask lineup for the event looks to be outstanding, with casks from Deschutes, R&B, Driftwood, Whistler Brewhouse, and DIX. This event sold out fast, and since so many craft beer fans will not be attending CAMRA Vice-President Lundy Dale is organizing an alternative event on the same date at St. Augustine’s. It will be a casual gathering at St. Augustine’s, where craft beer fans can go through the menu to create their own beer and food pairings. If your interested please RSVP with Lundy by email so that she can let St. Augustine’s know how many people will be attending.

Lastly, Wednesday January 6th is the last day to register for Serious Beer. Taught by Canada’s first Certified Cicerone Chester Carey, this eight week course will prepare students for the Cicerone Certified Beer Server examination. Students will learn about the history, brewing process, background, and taste of beer styles from Belgium, Germany, UK, and North America.

Cheers,
Ryan

Casks
Amberjack’s Tap House will be launching their cask programme, entitled Cask Night In The Burbs, on January 15th. As the name suggests, this cask programme is for the many real ale fans who live outside Vancouver. Cask Night In The Burbs will start January 15th with an oak-aged porter from Russell Brewing, then followed by a February 7th Super Bowl Cask Night with a cask of Russell Brewing’s Hemp Ale. The Feburary 7th cask will be free for CAMRA Members!

Yaletown Making it Real (Ale)

Yaletown Brewing’s Making it Real cask programme returns this week after a brief hiatus. Brewmaster Iain Hill will tap a cask of his IPA dry-hopped with Simcoe hops.
