Beer Wars Screening
|

CAMRA Vancouver, along with Beer Thirst and the Alibi Room present the first Vancouver screenings of Beer Wars.
Directed by Anat Baron, Beer Wars explores the behind the scenes of the
American beer industry, where small, independent brewers have to fight
daily against large, corporate brewers unwilling to lose any market
share. We will be joined by special guest, Greg Koch, CEO & Co-Founder of Stone Brewing Co
for the screenings. Roumor has it that we may see some new beers at out local craft beer suppliers just in time for Greg’s arrival.
In addition, local breweries will be on-hand serving a diverse selection of craft
beer, including Steamworks, Yaletown Brewing, Granville Island’s new
limited release Chocolate Stout, and Red Truck Limited Release Porter. Where else besides your own home can you watch Beer Wars with craft beer on hand?
Tickets are $25 for CAMRA members, and include a beer with the screening. Tickets can be
purchased tonight at the St. Augustine’s cask from CAMRA Vice-President Lundy Dale, Thursday at the DIX cask event from CAMRA Corporate Liaison Monica Frost, or online anytime. No minors.

Casks
For those heading to Victoria there are some pretty interesting casks lined up at Spinnakers, including two whisky-infused scotch ales for today’s Burns Supper!
St. Augustines’s Manichean Mondays
January 25 and February 1 @ 6:00pm St. Augustine’s will be pouring a cask of Driftwood Brewing’s Crooked Coast Alt dry-hopped with Saaz hops. The additional dry-hopping with this noble hop should further enhance the earthy, spicy hop profile in this beer. Altbiers are very versatile when paired with food. The full malt flavours in this Alt match nicely with grilled meats, and there’s enough hops to stand up to fattier dishes — classic pairing is Alt with pork. Coming up next Monday at St. Augustine’s is a cask of Granville Island’s Jolly Abbott.
Yaletown Making it Real (Ale)
January 28 @ 4:00pm This Thursday brewmaster Iain has a cask of his Pale Ale for us. Iain has opted not to add anything to the cask to highlight what effects cask conditioning has on the beer. According to Iain this cask will be “just the
unadulterated goods Pacific Northwest Pale Ale style.” Try this side-by-side with the draught version!
Dix Cask Thursday
January 28 @ 5:00pm Brewmaster Derrick Franche has organized what will certainly be an amazing cask night this thursday. Preliminarily dubbed the “Five Ring Circus”, this cask night will feature five casks from five local BC brewers. Dave Woodward from High Mountain Brewing (formerly Whistler Brewhouse), has send down a cask of his “Dave’s Damm Dangerously Drinkable Double IPA” ( 8.5% 70 IBU,brewed and dry-hopped with Cascades). Derrick will have a cask of his barleywine primed with maple syrup, and Dave Varga from Taylor’s Crossing will have a cask of his Indian Arm IPA. As if that were not enough, Kim Marrington from R&B Brewing will have her very first cask, a vanilla bean stout. Lastly, Daniel Knibbs will have his last cask from Dead Frog, an extra Dark Ale (6.5%, aggressively hopped with Cascade, Centennial & Zeus). I’ve been told that Brian Smith former head brewer of Alberta microbrewery Wild Rose and Calgary brewpub Wildwood will be in attendance.
The Whip Real Ale Sundays
January 31 @ 4:00pm This Sunday The Whip will tap a cask of Mission Springs brewmaster Tim Brown’s IPA. This is a well-balanced pacific northwest styled IPA that pairs wonderfully with food. However, bolder beer calls for bolder food. Classic pairings tend to match the hops in the IPA with a spicier dish.

New Beer Arrivals/Restocks/Seasonals
The Alibi Room has a new tap lineup, including Barley Station Pilsner, Swans Oak-Aged Scotch Ale, Iain (of Yaletown brewing’s) Dry Hopped Symcoe IPA, Spinnakers Nut Brown, Tree Spiced Reserve, and more. A few more things to mention: First, Darby’s Pub has rotated their craft beer tower. They now have Central City ESB, Mission Springs IPA, Phillips Blue Buck, and Stanley Park Amber Ale on tap. Second, to help raise funds for relief efforts in Haiti Amber Jack’s will be donating $1 for every pint of Russell Pilsner sold with the goal of raising $2,500. Granville Island’s Chocolate Stout, their latest limited release, will be out in the coming weeks. Granville Island has partnered with Rogers Chocolates to brew this British-style stout with fair-trade coca. This stout has been brewed with pale, crystal, chocolate and black malts, and hopped with Magnum and Cluster. According to brewmaster Vern Lambourne, roast malt and bitter-sweet chocolate flavours are dominant with a hint of fruit and an unmistakable dark chocolate aroma. 6% ABV and 20 IBUs. Also in the works is an ESB from Driftwood, a “Ice-Holes” celebration lager from R&B, and a golden ale from Red Truck. More information on these will be in next week’s newsletter.
