Last Sunday was the Vancouver screening of Beer Wars at District 319, presented by CAMRA Vancouver and Beer Thirst. The screening turned out to be quite the event, with local breweries pouring their best and Greg Koch from Stone Brewing on hand to deliver a keynote before the start of the film. In addition, attendees were privy to Greg’s “Stone Skips Across the Pond”, a documentary of his travels to brew beer with Nøgne Ø in Norway and Brew Dog in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. For those of you who missed the event you can now rent Beer Wars on Shaw-On-Demand . Thanks again to Beer Thirst, Central City, Driftwood, Granville Island, Howe Sound, R&B, Red Truck, Steamworks, and Swans for pouring the beer and to special guests Sun Wizard for performing.

On the cask front, this weeks looks to be pretty exciting, with a whopping seven casks tapped between Thursday and Monday, including three on Sunday!

Cheers, and remember to pour yourself and friends a local, flavourful, and expertly crafted beer when watching that football game this Sunday!

Casks
Dustin Sepkowski has continues to blog the daily casks served at Spinnakers, This week’s casks can be found here. The theme for this week looks to be European hops!

Also, it looks like the formerly unofficial Alibi Room twitter account is now official! Follow Nigel @alibiroom for the latest information on what’s coming up on tap at the Alibi Room.

Yaletown Making it Real (Ale)

February 4 @ 4:00pm
Tapped this Thursday at Yaletown Brewing is a cash of brewmaster Iain Hill’s Warehouse Stout heavily dry-hopped with Simcoe hops. This beer has been served at the Alibi Room a few times under the name ‘Simcoe Stout’. This is certainly a unique combination between the stout’s roasty character and what Iain refers to as an almost bud-like hop flavour. Note that this is the last and only cask at Yaletown Brewing in February!

Dix Cask Thursday

February 4 @ 5:00pm
For the month of February DIX will be tapping a cask of brewmaster Derrick Franche’s IPA. With the Olympics on the horizon Derrick expects the cask to go quickly, so be sure to show up on time!

Taylor’s Crossing Firkin Friday

February 5 @ 5:00pm
This Friday is the first Friday of the month, which means another Firkin Friday at Taylor’s Crossing! Brewmaster David Varga has a cask of his English Porter aged on American oak. David has brewed this porter to have a bit higher ABV to help help enhance the oak flavour, which he hopes will impart a whisky character to the beer.

Amber Jack’s Cask Night in the ‘Burbs

February 7 @ Superbowl Kick-off (around 3:00pm)
Amber Jack’s will be celebrating Superbowl Sunday with the second installment of their “Cask Night in the ‘Burbs” cask programme. At kickoff time Amber Jack’s will tap a cask of Russell Brewing’s Juniper Pale Ale dry-hopped with whole Saaz hops, which will be free for CAMRA members! The superbowl party will be hosted by DJ Chris, and will feature music and dancing during half-time and after the game.

The Whip Real Ale Sundays

February 7 @ 4:00pm
The Whip will have a cask from James Walton over at Storm Brewing. No word yet on what the cask will be, but knowing James you won’t want to miss it!

Three Lions Cask Night

February 7 @ 7:00pm
For the month of February, Three Lions Cafe will tap a cask from Russell Brewing at 7:00pm. This week they will have a cask of Russell Brewing’s Dry-hopped IPA. This IPA has been dry-hopped with whole Saaz hops, which should provide an interesting Noble hop character to the IPA.

St. Augustines’s Manichean Mondays

February 8 @ 6:00pm
St. Augustine’s will tap a cask of Howe Sound’s English Pale Ale dry-hopped with Mt. Hood. This pale ale will be a great canvas on which to showcase the flavours imparted by dry-hopping. Mt. Hood is an aromatic hop derived from Hallertauer, which should impart a mild. clean aroma similar to its Noble hop parent.

New Beer Arrivals/Restocks/Seasonals

Keep a look out for Granville Island’s Chocolate Stout, R&B’s Iceholes Celebration Lager, and Howe Sound’s Three Beavers Imperial Red Ale, all of which should be hitting the shelves sometime in the next week or so. Also on the horizon is Driftwood’s Naughty Hildegard’s ESB.

Red Truck Brewing’s latest limited release, a Belgian golden ale, should be out in the next week. David Varga at Red Truck has brewed this with pale malt and candi sugar, a Belgian brewing sugar used to brew higher ABV Belgian styles. To keep this strong golden ale true to style David has hopped it with Czech Saaz and UK Kent Goldings. According to David, it does a good job at hiding it’s 8% ABV alcohol content. Look for it at Taylor’s Crossing and other local pubs that Carry Red Truck.

To stay prepared for the anticipated Olympic rush, DIX Barbeque has had to clear up tank space for their best-sellers. This means that there will be no Czech Pilsner and no replacement for the barleywine until after the games. However, brewmaster Derrick Franche has an Irish Stout and a Belgian Grand Gru (A strong, dark, Belgian-style ale) that will be tapped once the current rotating dark (a porter) is finished. DIX will be open to the public for the Olympics, and are stocked with plenty of Crosstown Lager, Red Truck Ale, and IPA.

Lastly The Railway Club have updated their taps list. They now have the following on tap: Central City Red Racer Lager and ESB, Crannog Back Hand of God Stout, Granville Island Pale Ale and Lager, Lighthouse Rip Tide Pale Ale, Phillips Chocolate Porter and IPA, Red Truck Ale, R&B Cream Ale, and Tree Cutthroat Pale Ale, and Thirsty Beaver Amber Ale.
