This week, we are launching a new series of interviews with organizations who support CAMRA and the craft beer heroes behind them. We’re excited to introduce you to the folks who brew your favourite beers, run your local homebrew store, sling suds at your local taproom, or make sure your liquor store is stocked with craft beer deliciousness.
First up is Townsite Brewing, from Powell River on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. This exciting new brewery have recently celebrated their 1st anniversary and owner Karen Skadsheim took time out of her busy schedule to chat to CAMRA.
In a nutshell, how would you describe Townsite Brewing? A perfect storm: we have the perfect mix of people from all backgrounds, not just brewing, but sales, marketing, and administration who have come together to form this fun little brewery at the top of the Sunshine Coast
How important are growlers to your brewery? How many of them did you sell last year? VERY!! And they are very important to the community because we have committed $1 from every growler to local non-profits. We sold over 8000 growlers last year so that is $8000 that stayed in Powell River and went directly to helping our community.
Why did Townsite join CAMRA? I was already a personal member so when the brewery opened, it seemed natural to get a corporate membership.
What’s your favourite beer? You know that’s impossible to answer!! There are so many styles, but I have to say that I am very partial to Cedric’s Belgian styles. The triple he brewed for last year’s ‘Hulk Series’ was sublime. I still have a few bottles in my cellar, and I can’t wait for this year’s!
What’s the next big new event/beer release for Townsite? The 2013 ‘Hulk Series’ beer: YOGN 82, a 9.0% Belgian triple. YOWZA!!
Is there anything else you wanted to add? Can’t think of anything off the top of my head, but keep up the great work CAMRA!!
If you want to sample some Townsite brews, you find their beer on tap at St Augustine’s right now and also at various local liquor stores.
Check out their website or facebook for more info on what they are up to. Former CAMRA President Paddy Treavor’s recent blog post about Townsite – How a craft brewery inspired a small town – is definitely well worth a read.
