The Spotlight is a series of interviews with organizations who support CAMRA and the craft beer heroes behind them. This week we chat to James Walton, chief mad scientist, owner, head brewer and delivery driver at East Vancouver’s Storm Brewing.
How long has Storm been around?
Since 1994.
How would you describe what Storm does to the uninitiated?
We make interesting and creative beers.
You are now doing growler fills – what has the response been from beer drinkers to this?
OMG! People love it. I get to make creative beers every week – “Brainstorms”.
What do you currently have on tap for fills?
Precipitation Pilsner, Highland Scottish Ale, Hurricane IPA, Black Plague Stout, Flanders Imperial Red Ale, Vanilla Whiskey Stout, and James & the Giant Peach Cider.
What size brew set up do you have?
3200 L.
There are lots of new breweries opening up and expanding right now. What is your philosophy behind what the ideal size is for your brewery?
I always wanted to be the owner of a small craft brewery. I wanted to be the brewer and the delivery driver.
How did you first get into making such wickedly sour beers?
In 1996 Iain Hill encouraged me.
What is your favourite beer at the moment?
Old Rasputin.
Do you guys have any casks coming up or special releases?
Three casks are lined up. Not sure what and where quite yet. Stay up to date through our Storm Facebook page.
Find out more about Storm via their website, and keep up on the latest new releases via their Facebook or Twitter. Or better yet, stop by for a tour! They’re at 310 Commercial Drive.
