CAMRA continues its series of interviews with organizations who support CAMRA and the craft beer heroes behind them. We’re excited to introduce you to the folks who brew your favourite beers, run your local homebrew store, sling suds at your local taproom, or make sure your liquor store is stocked with craft beer deliciousness.
This week’s spotlight is on CAMRA’s newest corporate supporter, Four Winds Brewing out in Delta. The family operated brewery is the newest addition to the Vancouver craft beer scene, with their tasting room set to open this Saturday June 1 from noon – 6pm. They will be starting out with four year round beers: IPA, Pale Ale, Saison and Pilsner.
What’s the story behind why you decided to open a brewery? Following a tradition of family business combined with our passion for beer and brewing, we felt the timing was right to embark on this venture.
How would you describe Four Winds Brewing in a nutshell? It was once a common term or expression “scattered to the four winds” meaning going in many directions, so it relates to us as we will be brewing many different styles inspired by the major brewing regions of the world. New world innovation influenced by old word tradition.
Who have you brought on board as a brewer? Our brewer is Brent Mills who worked previously as the production manager and head brewer for R&B Brewing.
What is your favourite beer style and why? It really depends on the season but the beer I choose most would be an IPA for its drinkability, but also love belgian and sour beers for their complexity.
What have you got planned for seasonal beers? Our first seasonal release will be a Saison barrel aged with Brettanomyces. Look for it in the fall.
How have the changes to tasting lounge legislation for breweries affected you? We believe its a positive change and should benefit all craft brewers in BC.
How big is your brew set up? We have a 2500L Brew house, 4x 5000L conical fermenters and 1 5000L Bright beer tank. We will be selling draft and growlers to start and will have our bottling line up and running in July. Our beers will be sold in four packs.
Who did your beautiful graphic design? Our good friend and amazing Vancouver artist Andy Dixon.
When is your opening? We will open the doors to our tasting room on June 1st.
Four Winds has an open house this Saturday to celebrate their grand opening, so pop on by to sample some of their delicious Belgian-inspired offerings – they’re out at # 4 – 7355 72nd Street in Delta, BC (in Tilbury Industrial park over looking River Rd), just a 30 drive out of Vancouver. Their beer will also be available for tasting at some of the Vancouver Craft Beer Week events, so keep an eye out for them.
