It’s been a busy little while for CAMRA Vancouver and CAMRA BC – some of it exciting, some of it not so much; but that is the nature of the gig! President David has a few updates for you on the goings-on in and around the CAMRA Vancouver Community.
I can’t believe we are past the midway point of my second term as president of this branch! Seems like yesterday when I was approached by Adam Chatburn and asked if I wanted to consider a nomination for this role. It has been an incredible experience, in which I have learned so much! As we slowly approach winter season, and the AGM in February 2017, it is time to put the bug in your ear about the possibility of stepping up to the plate and taking a leadership role with CAMRA Vancouver. If you want to learn more about the various responsibilities of the directors in our society, please click here to learn more. On that note, we are still looking for an interim Events Coordinator, so if you would like to discuss the possibility of stepping into that role for the next 4 months, please contact me at pres@camravancouver.ca so we can meet and discuss.
As we shifted away from previous executive members and tried to redistribute duties, we have been faced with our fare share of challenges. We are trying to play a bit of catch-up on some correspondences and trying to reshuffle a few duties so that we can best position ourselves to put on the fabulous events you have come to expect form our team. If you are reaching out to us in regards to an event (either current or previous) and are yet to get a response, please be patient as we are getting things all lined up. That being said, we are still planning awesome things for you to attend like Vancouver Craft Cider Festival!
On the note of executive roles, we have welcomed a new Secretary in our midst, as Alex McGowan joins our ranks. He brings a wealth of non-profit experience, a dedication to Roberts Rules, successful advocacy campaigns under his belt, and is an all around good guy who loves beer. Click here to learn more about Alex and what he brings to the table!
CAMRA BC has been busy working on a few things as well – we are looking at potentially birthing a branch midway up Vancouver-Island. This would span from Duncan to Nanaimo. We have a strong community contingent there that has delivered a letter of intent to the BC board. So far, everything looks like it is moving along nicely and if all goes well, we may see a new branch sooner rather than later!
We are working hard to try and better understand the implications of our branch structure under the new societies act. We are working on understanding if/how CAMRA BC should be grandfathered under the new act. There are lots of ways to help CAMRA BC, feel free to read BC President Jeremy’s post here for more details!
Lastly, some sad news coming from CAMRA Powell River. One of our CAMRA family members, Jonathan Cote and his wife Andrea, recently lost everything in a house fire that spread from a neighbouring structure to their home. They escaped with nothing more than their lives and the clothes on their backs and tragically have no insurance to replace their treasured belongings or to help to rebuild what was destroyed. CAMRA Powell River President Paddy Trevor has begun a GoFundMe campaign to help them rebuild. If you are able, please support it by following the link and donating here.
I hope you all had a great summer and I look forward to seeing you out and about in the city.
David Perry
President
CAMRA BC – Vancouver Branch
