Bottle Jockey

The Spotlight is a series of interviews with the craft beer heroes behind local organizations who are helping grow the beer scene in our fine city. In this issue, we look at Bottle Jockey.

There is a generally accepted understanding in these parts, that, the farther east you live in the Lower Mainland, fewer are the number of bottle shops offering quality and hard to find craft beers. For those of us fortunate enough to live in Vancouver proper, we enjoy a level of easy access to limited releases, imports and quality local beers at a reasonable price – something that many of us may take for granted. This is certainly not the case for those that live in other municipalities, who – for a long time – have had to travel out of their way to find decent selections.

Fortunately, for those of you in Burnaby, you have Bottle Jockey.Conveniently found just a few blocks from Brentwood Town Centre, Bottle Jockey has developed a craft beer program that answers the demands of many craft beer drinkers living in the suburbs of Burnaby and surrounding areas. Brightly lit (but not in a way that exposes their bottles to volatile temperatures or direct sunlight, notably) and staffed by a team that knows their trade. I myself have asked staff members for their opinions on certain releases, and have found them to be succinct and quite on the mark with their experience. One of their best offerings, however, comes in the form of accessibility. Don’t live nearby? No problem: shop online via their website and have your purchases delivered to your home or office. It is incredibly convenient and goes a long way in keeping a well-stocked fridge or cellar. I would find this especially handy in coordinating craft beer purchases for the workplace, where the effort and time required to put together an office beer event might be prohibitive.

More than once, I have made the trip out to their store to get my hands on releases that have sold out everywhere else, and have been extremely pleased with my experience. It is also very much worth mentioning that, during a time where the government’s egregious liquor reforms have hit private retailers in ways that stymie growth and put business sustainability at risk, Bottle Jockey has proactively offered active CAMRA members a ten percent discount on all single cans / bottles of craft beer (of all sizes). Recognizing that this comes at the expense of their profit margins, we are incredibly grateful for their generosity and support.

Bottom line? If you need convenience, trustworthy and reliable beer information, and a consistently high-quality local craft beer source based in Burnaby, go check out Bottle Jockey. You won’t be disappointed.

Bottle Jockey is located at #107-1899 Rosser Avenue, just off Lougheed Highway in Burnaby. Follow them on Twitter at @bottlejockey , and shop online at www.bottlejockey.ca .
