CAMRA Vancouver Presidential Address

Hello members and community friends, david

It’s hard to believe another CAMRA year has passed us by. I would like to start off by thanking members of our past Executive Team who are not returning to fill their positions and moving on to bigger and better things: Amanda Barry-Butchart, Monica Frost and Ryan Baker thank you so much for all the work you have put in to CAMRA Vancouver over the years. I would also like to take a moment to thank Adam Chatburn, who stepped down a little over a month before the end of his second term as our branch President. Adam is an incredibly intelligent man who is passionate about beer and about our community. He has been a great source of inspiration to me, and I thank him for putting the bug in my ear about accepting a presidential nomination – even though my first instinct was to say no.

It’s true, when Adam first asked me if I would accept a nomination to be President, I did say no. I had only been an executive member for half a year, and only actively involved in the community for a bit over a year before that. I was new, different and was not a part of what was currently established. But then I realized, what is currently established can change – in fact, it should change! That’s not to say we should scrap the whole thing and start anew; but we have a foundation here to build off of that can be something amazing! I see a Vancouver chapter that is about 1,300 members strong – but is only partially engaged. Outside of the city’s core, our activity dwindles until it fizzles out almost entirely. My vision in this year is about bringing more community activity to the far-reaches of our chapter. I see a revamping of our Education Programs to reach a wider demographic and bring some variety that extends outside of a sit-down pencil and paper lecture. (Not that there is anything wrong with that!) I see campus communities thirsting for engagement and involvement in our greater scene. I see an amazing group of like minded people that have a foundation that can be used to build something bigger and better.

menssBut you may not agree – and I want to know that! I want you to reach out to me if there is something you want to see with your CAMRA chapter this year. I can’t guarantee every suggestion will be implemented, but I can guarantee that I, and our new Executive Team, will hear you. We plan to send a survey to our members in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes open for that. In the meantime, email me at pres@camravancouver.ca or tweet at me @davidjp87. Let’s make this year CAMRA Vancouver’s most memorable year ever! I’m ready for this, let’s get started!
