CAMRA VANCOUVER 2016 AGM

Hello everyone,

It is hard to believe that another AGM has passed us by. On the afternoon of February 27th we were joined by a group of CAMRA Vancouver Members at the Biltmore Cabaret to take part in the procedure. The AGM is a crucial piece to our year as it decides the fate and future of the organization for the upcoming year. At the meeting we discussed branch financials, the direction of CAMRA BC as an organization and we elected a new Executive board. I am pleased to say we had a nice array of attendees, ranging from some of our founding members to new members that only signed up this year! Now, was the event as well attended as I would have liked? No, of course not. We have several thousand members and we usually get about 100 people that come out. Honestly, we saw a lesser turnout this year than in past years, and that was disappointing. But, we can’t lament over those things as we had a great event none the less. I did get a few responses from AGM attendees with questions, so I thought this would be a good opportunity (and medium) to address some.

A year-end look back

As I write my last piece for the website before our AGM this month, I am simply overjoyed when I think about what we have done this year, and what the future holds. What we have accomplished this year simply wouldn’t have been possible without the best team out there. Here’s a small sampling of what your executive has done this year; just my way of saying thank you to them.

Executive Nominations

It is hard to believe that next month it will have been one year since I took over the presidency of the Vancouver Branch of this amazing organization. We have had casksa fantastic year full of ups and downs. We had a new team of fresh faces that were keen to be a difference maker in the community. One year later, we have endured a change in liquor reform, and a subsequent liquor reform letter writing campaign, an overhaul of the CAMRA Education Curriculum bringing in new exciting classes, and a constant increase to our community benefit program. We ran some new events (including a Vancouver Canadians Baseball Game and our No-Nonesense Cask Festival) as well as some tried and tested events like CiderWISE, Session Cask Festival and many more.

Beer Mile World Record

History was made on December 1st, when Ontario-born Lewis Kent set a new world record for the fastest Beer Mile. For those who don’t know, the Beer Mile is a frat house inspired race that requires athletes to finish 4 beers over the course of a mile (four laps of a track). Last month, 21 year-old Kent finished in just 4 minutes and 47 seconds - less time than it takes make coffee in the morning. His new time crushed his previous world record by two seconds and beat Cory Gallagher, his closest competition, by just one second.

A Look at “What’s Brewing”

Let’s look back to the early 2000s, before our current Vancouver branch was even in existence. Paul Morris, Lundy Dale, and a few others would meet regularly at a coffee shop (!) in Steveston as part of the Richmond Branch of CAMRA BC. Paul recalls, “The Lower Mainland scene, in terms of craft beer outlets, was dontown Vancouver. Monthly cask nights had started at DIX in July 2002 and there were a bunch of regulars turning up every time. I suggested to Lundy, why don’t we form a Vancouver branch?”

Bainbridge Liquor Store

The Spotlight is a series of interviews with the craft beer heroes behind local organizations who are helping grow the beer scene in our fine city. In this issue, we look at Bainbridge Liquor Store.

bainbridge1
Over the course of 2015, British Columbia has seen significant changes to the cost of craft beer at retail. Despite the affirmations by our government that consumers and retailers would not be impacted by the price increases brought forward by liquor law reforms, you and I know this has not been the case. Retailers have been forced to rethink what beers they order and give shelf space to because of the imbalance in markups, resulting in less variety and ultimately limiting the selection you would otherwise have.
